About the Foundation Our Mission How to Contribute Foundation Leadership Contact About the Foundation: The Defiance Public Library Foundation is a non-profit corporation committed to providing supplementary support to the Defiance Public Library and its branch libraries. Currently, library materials, equipment, programs and services are funded through public tax and grant monies. By encouraging private funding from individuals, businesses, and organizations, the Foundation is able to supplement government support of the Defiance Public Library. Such supplemental funding will make the difference between the "good" and "great" library system for the people of Defiance County. The Library faces needs and opportunities which are growing much faster than public funds available to support them. The Foundation's role is that of a catalyst, matching the special interest of potential donors with specific Library needs. Through private donations, the foundation is able to develop collections and services that the Library would otherwise be unable to provide. Along with on-going needs, expansion of library facilities is most certainly an important consideration as we look to the 21st century. This Foundation is classified as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. All contributions made to the foundation are tax deductible. Our Mission: To provide the Defiance Public Library with resources to enrich its many programs, collections and services, while reinforcing the need for continued and increased public support for the Library. To accomplish this mission we have developed the following goals: Establish an endowment fund to perpetuate the excellence of the Defiance Public Library system. Provide financial support for the expansion and improvement of Library facilities. Raise additional grants and other funding for long-term programs and services. How to Contribute: Cash Gifts and Year-End Giving Cash donations may provide maximum advantage of the charitable deduction on income tax returns. Lifetime gifts may also serve to reduce the size of estates and allow money to be put to immediate use. Securities Charitable gifts of stocks, bonds, shares in mutual funds and other investment securities may be made to the Foundation. An outright gift of securities may avoid capital gains tax liabilities and provide a charitable deduction for the present fair market value. Insurance The Foundation may be named a beneficiary or owner of life insurance policies as a current or deferred gift. A gift of insurance may have special tax advantages. Trusts Charitable lead trusts or charitable remainder trusts may offer major tax benefits to donors. Endowments Individual endowments may be established for an appropriate purpose requested by the donor. Bequests The Library Foundation may be named as beneficiary in a will or trust. Bequests may take the form of cash, securities, real estate or other assets. These planned- giving gifts may reduce the size of the estate for tax purposes. Please secure professional advice prior to making any commitments to insure the best possible result for your generosity. Foundation Leadership: The Defiance Public Library Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors which is responsible for managing the affairs of the Foundation. The Foundation Board is comprised of seven voting members and two non-voting members. The Vice President of the Library Board of Trustees and one representative of the Friends of the Library each hold a voting position on the Foundation Board along with five business, education and cultural leaders from the community. The Director of the Defiance Public Library and the Foundation Accountant each hold a non-voting position. The Foundation Board works cooperatively with the Library Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Library in their efforts to maintain excellence in the Library system for all the citizens of our community.
