DPLS Employee Benefits

The Defiance Public Library System offers more than a paycheck. We offer an attractive benefits package that is dependent upon your position classification and the number of hours worked per week.

Regular full-time and part-time employees are eligible for the following:

Deferred Compensation Program

  • Employee contributory supplemental retirement investment on a payroll deduction basis
  • Direct payroll deductions available

Holidays

  • Eight and a half annual paid holidays

Insurance (Full Time employees)

  • Hospital, and major medical
  • Prescription drug
  • Dental
  • Optical
  • Life and AD&D insurance

Professional Affiliations

  • 50% of basic membership fee for the Ohio Library Council

Sick Leave

  • 8 hours of sick leave earned per month for full-time employees (pro-rated for part-time staff)
  • Sick leave bank

Vacation

  • 10-20 vacation days annually depending on length of service and professional status

Personal Days

  • 3 personal days annually


In addition to the above-listed benefits, the following are available to all employees:

Direct Deposit of Payroll Checks

  • Direct deposit available for standard bank accounts

Training

  • Multiple training opportunities
  • Job shadowing
  • Annual paid staff training day

Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)

  • Contributions equal to 14% of each employee's salary are paid to OPERS by the Library.

Unemployment Compensation

  • Unemployment insurance at no cost to library employees

Worker's Compensation

  • Payment for medical and/or lost wages through the Bureau of Workers Compensation

Gifts of donated material, such as books and audio-visual items, may be accepted into the Defiance Public Library System’s collections after review by DPLS staff according to established guidelines. Items received but not used by DPLS will be donated to the each location’s Friends of the Library organizations, recycled, given away, or discarded.

Defiance Public Library System is most interested in receiving donations of new or gently used items in excellent condition. Groups or collections of items cannot necessarily be kept together and will be handled like all other donations.

We accept:

  • New and clean “Lightly” used books
  • Audiovisual items (CD’s, DVD’s, Videos, Video Games)
  • Magazines that are less than two years old

We DO NOT accept:

  • Textbooks 
  •  Workbooks
  • Yellowed, Torn, Mildewed or damaged books and magazines
  • Professional Society Journals
  • Sets of encyclopedias
  • Catalogs
  • Records 

What Are the Friends of the Library?

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit group formed to sponsor library programs and support services and technologies. Some of the activities of the Friends of the Library are:

  • Fundraising for capital projects or operating funds
  • Arranging events from booksales to donor campaigns
  • Assisting the library in obtaining grants 
  • Providing assistance for special projects at the library
  • Telling the community about the library and its services
  • Acting as a liaison between the library and community groups
  • Assisting the library board in lobbying for support

Our seven-member Board of Trustees is responsible for guiding major decisions about library strategies and operations. This includes everything from capital projects to the patron code of conduct. Board of Trustees Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at 4:00 p.m., location announced monthly.
