Fiction Books
Board Books: These sturdy books are made especially for infants and toddlers. They tell fun, simple stories while allowing children to learn how to hold a book, open it and turn the pages.
Picture Books: Picture books tell children's stories with the help of colorful illustrations. Perfect for Story Time and teaching the meanings of new words.
Easy Readers: Easy Readers are broken into 5 levels which gradually progress from easy to more difficult. These books encourage young readers as they develop their reading ability by providing story content that is interesting yest easy to follow.
Chapter Books: These books are written in short chapters which allow readers to develop attachments to the characters. Chapter books develop a reader's imagination and critical thinking skills.
Young Adult Books: Teen and Young Adult readers are a different breed that deserve their own books! This collection houses books in a wide range of interest from fantasy and vampires to humor and real life struggles. YA books come in a variety of formats such as Manga and Graphic Novels and often feature common Teen and Young Adult issues that readers can relate to.
Non-fiction Books
Borrowing Collection: These books cover every topic from History to Biographies to Folktales to Science Projects and can be checked out with an active DPLS Card.
Reference: Reference materials can be used by patrons in-house only. Four free photocopies of reference materials are allowed.
Audio/Visual/Periodical Materials
DVDs: A wide variety of DVDs (Youth and Adult titles) are available for checkout free of charge from any location of the Defiance Public Library System.
CDs: Musical CDs are available for checkout, including numerous kid-friendly titles.
Magazines: Several youth magazine issues are available for checkout at your local branch.
AudioBooks: Books on Tape and Books on CD are offered for Children, Young Adults, and Families.
CD-roms: Computer games and programs are available for request through the DPLS catalog in a variety of subject matter and formats.
Spanish Collection
The Defiance Public Library System offers a collection of titles en español and with side-by-side translation. Titles en español are available in both Fiction and Non-Fiction.
Educator & Homeschool Resources
Adult Educational Resources are available in print. These include Teacher's Manuals, Lesson Plan Guides, Classroom Ideas, and Homeschool Guides and Resources. Please ask at your local library. An Ellison Die Cut machine is available for use to patrons over the age of 18 who bring their own paper.
Educational Toys/Games
Toys, games, and kits that promote learning are available for checkout at the main library.
