Why is the Defiance Public Library renovating?
Why are we renovating?
Infrastructure: It has been over 30 years since the Defiance Public Library has undergone a major interior renovation. This includes all of our heating, air conditioning, electrical and windows. By renewing our infrastructure alone we will be able to save over $15,000 per year in maintenance and utility costs.
Interiors: Our carpeting, furniture, floorplans, and paint are also in need of refreshing. Our most cost-effective option is to follow the work and mess of the infrastructure with a refurbishing of our interior. Our main goals in our interior work include becoming fully ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant and to utilize the space we have in a more flexible way to meet our patron's needs for the next 20 years.
Usage: Our usage in the Defiance Public Library has continued to increase steadily. More users and more materials circulating put a strain on our 100+ year old building. This renovation will make the building more efficient for patrons, staff, and the changes in library services that we are seeing.
Preservation: The DPLS Board of Trustees wants to ensure that the Defiance Public Library will remain a vibrant part of the community for the next 20 years. This renovation will prepare and help preserve the building for a further 20 years of library service.
