Children and families are invited to the Summer Reading Tent on the Fort Grounds at Defiance Public Library on July 1 at 4:30PM for this special presentation by Wendy Baker of the Defiance Soil and Water Conservation District.
Maria was a girl who studied insects. She wanted answers about the lifecycle of bugs, particularly butterflies. She began gathering and raising caterpillars to learn what they ate, how they grew, and where they came from. She used her scientific observations to make some of the most detailed paintings of butterflies found around the world. Her work helped to disprove untrue theories and preserve knowledge of some species that have since become extinct. We’ll learn about Maria’s determination and scientific contributions and create our own “summer birds.”
